We wanted to launch this project differently, but we can't stay quiet. We've been beside ourselves for two days--punched in the face again by a very public suicide.
Here's my attempted reflection and a couple words on losing Kate Spade to suicide.
Warning: this is NOT kid friendly. This is VERY raw.
According to the CDC, someone dies from suicide every 12 minutes. For every statistical death, there are 25 attempts. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for Americans (see more). According to this article by NPR, suicide is the only top 10 cause of death in the US that is not declining, but increasing--that's taking into account vehicular deaths and gun violence deaths, which are both declining.
Our society acts like there's nothing we can do to prevent these losses, but that's just being irresponsible and naïve. We have the power to save lives. We need mental health reform and to cure the stigma in this country around mental illness. To discover whether or not you've been infected with the stigma, and to find resources head to curestigma.org.
If you're feeling unsafe to yourself or others, call 1-844-493-8255 or text TALK to 38255 (in Colorado). OR call the national suicide prevention hotline. This life is sometimes too much... there are people that can help.
